Useful rain in WA, TAS

Widespread instability across WA continued to fuel thunderstorms today while an errant low gave heavy showers in TAS.

A sluggish weather pattern over WA has seen a succession of slow-moving surface and upper troughs move across most of the state bringing isolated heavy storms and widespread light to moderate accumulations over the past few days. Paraburdoo Airport in the East Gascoyne received 11.4mm in 12 minutes late this afternoon around the same time that Salmon Gums in the southern Goldfields recorded 11.6 in 8 minutes. In the 24 hours to 9 this morning, Tuckanarra 70km SW of Meekatharra topscored with 42.2mm followed by 33.4 at Mulga Downs, 140km NNE of Paraburdoo. Today and this evening, storms gave a further 71mm to Mulga Downs, a two-day total of 104.4.

Tasmania's North and East Coasts recorded some moderate and briefly heavy falls during the day as a weak Low moved through Bass Strait, directing moist northeasterlies onto the island. Scamander on the East Coast registered 37mm betwen 9am and 3pm for a 24 hour to 9am Monday total of 50.2. A downpour gave Hobart City gauge 13.6mm in 30 minutes from 7pm.

Heat dominates the continent

High pressure systems have not yet begun their northward migration for winter, resulting in an Indian Summer for much of the continent. Highs during April have been weak and remained close to the southern coastline or in the Tasman, giving mild easterlies or northeasterlies and above average night and day temperatures almost everywhere in the country. Minima this morning were 4 to 9 above in a broad arc stretching from western VIC through SA to SE WA while maxima today were 8 to 11 above in NE SA, western NSW and SW QLD.
