Fronts bring brief heavy rain to WA, SA

A pair of cold fronts, one moving into SW WA and a second rolling across SE SA, brought brief heavy rain this morning. Two lines of heavy showers crossed the Perth Metro area around 6am accompanied by winds gusting to 91km/h at coastal Swanbourne. In Myaree, 10km SSW of Perth CBD, trees were uprooted by the wind, blocking North Lake Road. Brief heavy rain was recorded from the fast-moving showers, though 24-hour to 9am falls across the Southwest were mostly between 5 and 15mm. Karnet, in the Darling Range 35km ENE of Mandurah, recorded 25.8 bringing its weekly total to 149mm. Early in the afternoon, the front gave wind gusts of 109km/h in the state's east at Esperance and at Cheadenup, 60km E of Ravensthorpe.

In SA, a broad rainband ahead of another front crossed the Eyre Peninsula last night and the state's southeast this morning giving falls of 5 to 15mm. The best falls of around 15mm were on the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas and Kangaroo Island.

Ski season starts -- without snow

The Australian ski season officially started today with an absence of the main ingredient. Snowfalls over the past couple of weeks on some of the Victorian Alps, notably around Mt Buller, were washed away by recent rain, while in the NSW Snowy Mountains snow was lacking at all resorts.
