Heavy dry-season downpour in Darwin

Heavy early morning showers gave over 25mm to northern parts of Darwin. August monthly average rainfalls around Darwin are around 5mm, yet in the 24 hours to 9am, Karama recorded 48.8mm, Leanyer 32.2, Shoal Bay 21.0 and Darwin Hospital 19.2mm. Most of the rain fell in an hour or two. These locations are all 10 to 20km N to NE of Darwin. A small band of intense rain developed in the area soon before 3am, then moved slowly westwards across the coast into Beagle Bay, retaining its identity and intensity until around 9am. Virtually no other rain was recorded in the Territory.
