Major flooding develops in W QLD as rain continues
Scattered heavy falls continue in NSW

The monsoonal low maintains its stately southeasterly progress. At 4pm EST it is located south of Mt Isa and has deepened slightly. The remains of the trough that was forced into NE NSW yesterday by short-lived ridging up the coast can be seen lingering near Brisbane, while the main trough through western QLD has reasserted itself in central NSW. BoM

Above: Flood status at 4pm shows all western rivers in flood with widespread moderate to major flooding. BoM
Right: Record rainfall for Mt Isa. Weatherzone
Below: Rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am. BoM

Major flooding develops in W QLD as rain continues

Record rain fell in Mt Isa overnight as widespread heavy rain continued across the state. Flooding intensified and spread to all western rivers today. With further rain predicted as the monsoon low moves slowly into the Central West, major roads have been cut, airdrops of supplies have begun and boats brought out for essential transport. A severe weather warning was in force for strong winds and torrential rain around and particularly to the south and east of the low.

Gulf Country

The heaviest rain in the 24 hours to 9am fell in the Mt Isa region. 198.2mm was recorded at the airport and 196.2 at Mt Isa Mine, both all time records in 37 and 64 years of record respectively. The highest one-day total at the old Post Office site, which operated from 1926 to 1971, was 157.5mm on 14 January 1941, so this ranks as Mt Isa's wettest day on record. Even heavier rain was recorded by the flood warning network, with a report of 246mm at Lake Moondarra, 20km NE of the town. Serious flooding occurred in the town, and areas to the north were isolated (See report for 16 January).

As can be seen in image , the bulk of the rain fell overnight as the monsoon low passed directly overhead. Three-hourly rounded totals at the airport show the steady buildup of rain as the low approached from the northwest:
9am to noon: 1mm
noon to 3pm: 11mm
3pm to 6pm: 26mm
6pm to 9pm: 23mm
9pm to midnight: 42mm
midnight to 3am: 70mm
3am to 6am: 7mm
6am to 9am: 18mm

While Mt Isa recorded the heaviest falls, an area several hundred kilometres to the north and east received over 100mm (see ). Cloncurry (110km E) reported 138.2mm, Devoncourt Station (95km SE) 167, and Kamilaroi Station (160km N) 110mm.

Flooding has cut the main access road between QLD and the NT, the Barkly Highway, in three places between Mt Isa and Camooweal. Airlifts of food and supplies were being made to stranded motorists this afternoon. The Flinders Highway has been cut west of Julia Creek and the Gregory River Bridge at Gregory Downs was under 7.5m of floodwater at 9am after the river rose extremely rapidly to a record height overnight . Most roads off main highways are closed, or open only to 4WD or high wheelbased vehicles.

Nicholson, Gregory, Leichhardt and Flinders Rivers : Minor flooding was occurring in the Nicholson around Doomadgee. On the Gregory, the river peaked at Riversleigh at 8 metres last night and had reached a record of just below 13m at Gregory Downs Bridge this evening causing major flooding.

The headwaters of the Leichhardt River basin experienced the very heavy rainfall in the Mt Isa area. Gunpowder Ck at Gunpowder near Kamilaroi reached a record height of 8.7 metres yesterday and is now falling. Other gauges in the sparse network on this river were reporting minor flooding, but significant rises with major flooding were expected given the volume of rain upstream.

The same heavy rain area affected the western parts of the Flinders River system around Cloncurry. Sharp river rises have been recorded in the Cloncurry at Cloncurry and the Corella at Carsland, both of which were reporting major flooding this morning. In the eastern area of the Flinders River system, rainfall has generally been lighter with the highest 24 hour report of 43mm at Richmond. Significant river rises with some minor to moderate flooding is occurring in the Flinders around Richmond.

Continued below >>>

Below: River level plots show the rapid rise in the Cloncurry River at Cloncurry from below minor to above major in a little over 12 hours overnight and the phenomenal rise in the Gregory at Gregory Downs, from a little over 4 to 12 metres in 24 hours. The Gregory subsequently peaked at just under 13m, a record. BoM

Below: Gulf and North Coast rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am. Falls of more than 100mm were recorded for over a hundred kilometres around Mt Isa and along the North Coast around Cairns. Low Isles, north of Cairns, recorded 137mm in 3 hours to 3am, 80.8 of that falling in the hour to 2am. Cairns Airport registed 88mm in the 3 hours to 9am. BoM Below: Gulf flood status at 4pm EST. Since yesterday, flooding has spread to the Flinders basin and major flooding is occurring in the Flinders, Leichhardt, Gregory and Nicholson. BoM

Below: SW QLD rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am. Falls of 25 to 100mm were common in the upper reaches of most systems. Top fall was 126.2mm at Bauhinia Downs Store, 120km SSE of Blackwater. Brigalow Research Station, 90km SW of Biloela, had its wettest January day in 33 years of record with 102.6mm. BoM Below: SW QLD rivers flood status at 4pm EST. Flooding is occurring in all systems, with major flooding along the Barcoo. BoM

Southwestern rivers and

Georgina: Minor flooding was reported at Urandangie.

Diamantina: Minor to moderate flooding was occurring in the upper reaches of the Diamantina and its tributaries around Winton.

Cooper Creek/Thomson/Barcoo: Major flooding is occurring along the Barcoo River downstream of Blackall and minor to moderate flooding is occurring along the Thomson River. Residents of Winton have taken to rubber boats to get to town after the bridge over the Barcoo became submerged later today. A 15-year-old girl who became trapped in gushing water was rescued yesterday in the Barcoo after being found clinging to a tree. The Barcoo River at Blackall peaked at above moderate flood level yesterday morning and has stayed close to this level as waters from continuing heavy rain upstream arrive. Levels at Coolagh and Isisford, downstream from Blackall, are above major. Rainfall reports in the 24 hours to 9am included Jochmus 117mm, Tambo 50mm, Eastmere 75mm, Birricannia 69mm and Bogewong 80mm. River rises and moderate flooding are occurring at all downstream locations to Retreat, near Windorah.

Minor to moderate flooding is occurring along the Thomson River, with river rises reported at all locations from Muttaburra to Jundah. A peak height of 5.5m was recorded this evening at Muttaburra.

Bulloo: River levels peaked at Adavale at 3.25m yesterday, but rises above moderate flood level are still being reported at Milroy to the south.

Paroo: Moderate flooding was reported in the upper reaches of the Paroo at Humeburn.

Warrego: Falls of 50 to 60mm in the 24 hours to 9am (highest 64mm at Wetlands) were reported in the northeast of the catchment leading to minor flooding at Wetlands and Lochinvar north of Augathella.

Below: Darling Downs/Maranoa rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am. Rain was generally lighter across catchments, though falls in the Eastern Darling Downs were mostly between 25 and 50mm. BoM Below: Darling Downs/Maranoa flood status at 4pm EST. Major flooding has begun in the upper Balonne, while minor to moderate levels have been reached in the SE Border rivers. BoM

Darling Downs/Maranoa rivers and

Balonne and Maranoa: 24 hour to 9am falls were generally 20 to 40mm. The main focus of flooding is in the Surat area on the Balonne and its immediate tributaries, and in the lower reaches of the Maranoa River to the west. The Balonne had reached moderate flooding at Warkon, east of Surat, by late this afternoon.

Border rivers: River rises and minor flooding are occurring in the upper reaches of the Macintyre River and lower reaches of the Weir River. Heavy rainfall reports in the 24 hours to 9am include Bukkulla 92mm, Ben Lomond 49mm, Swan Vale 50mm and Danthonia 48mm. Elsewhere rainfall totals have generally been less than 30mm. In the Macintyre River, minor flooding is occurring at Ashford and Wallangra in NSW. The river at Ashford peaked at 4.98 metres at midnight this morning. In the Weir River, the river level peaked at Ballymena at 6.22 metres at 3pm yesterday and minor flooding is now easing. Moderate flood level has been reported in the Moonie at Flinton.

Scattered heavy falls continue in NSW

Somewhat overshadowed by the rain in QLD, heavy falls have continued on the northern slopes, tablelands and coast of NSW. Very heavy rain fell this morning in the Coffs Harbour area and late this afternoon around Ballina. 103.6mm was recorded at Coffs Harbour Airport in the 24 hours to 9am, 40.4 of this falling in one hour to 5.30am. Flood warning network gauges reported 122mm for the 24 hours to 9am at Belleview Park Dorrigo and 154mm at Crystal Creek in the Bellinger River Valley, 133mm of which fell between 2 and 9am. Ballina Airport reported 61mm between 3 and 6pm.
