Gales, heavy rain and a tornado in SW WA
Windy in TAS

Gales, heavy rain and a tornado in SW WA

An vigorous, wintry cold front swept across the SW of WA around the middle of the day, bringing damaging wind gusts and a suspected tornado as well as useful rain. The reported tornado hit Bunbury's Outer Harbour, causing extensive damage to the Naval Cadet Unit, uprooting dozens of trees, blowing off roofs and leaving a trail of debris. The strongest wind gusts reported during the day were 85km/h at Rottnest Island and Cape Naturaliste.

There were some heavy showers with and ahead of the front and in the cold air field behind it. Witchcliffe, 8km S of Margaret River, registered 10mm in just 12 minutes while the Perth Metro station recorded 10.6mm in the hour to 1pm. In Perth's eastern outskirts, Bickley recorded 49mm for the 24 hours to 9am Thursday, while the state's top fall for that period was 60mm at Dwellingup.

Windy in TAS

A strong westerly stream, typical of August, persists over TAS between a 1030hPa high over southern Australia and a 960hPa low well to the south of the state. The highest wind gusts recorded today were 143 atop Mt Wellington and 141 on Maatsuyker Island. Scotts Peak Dam in the Southwest reported a top gust of 122km/h.
