Record heat continues in WA

Maximum temperature departures from normal today. BoM

Meekatharra in central WA broke its long-standing October maximum temperature record for the second day in a row today as the area of high temperatures in the state contracted to the east and north. Meekatharra's maximum of 40.6 yesterday was the highest for October in 54 years of record; today's top was 41.0. Other records to fall today were even hotter: 42.9 at Wiluna (previous highest 41.2 in 46 years of record), 42.6 at Carnegie (41.6 in 15 years) and 41.5 at Yeelirrie (31 years of record). Yeelirrie, like Meekatharra, experienced its second day of record heat, breaking its previous October record of 40.4 yesterday with a reading of 40.6. A cooler airmass creeping across the coast cooled temperatures in the far south.
