Hail, flash flooding from VIC storms
Hail, strong winds in WA Wheat Belt

Hail, flash flooding from VIC storms

Severe thunderstorms gave heavy rain and some substantial dumps of hail across the Gippsland and central areas of VIC this afternoon and evening. Some of the storms were very slow moving, with extended heavy rain producing flash flooding.

  • Severe storms first developed over the Bellarine Peninsula south of Geelong and particularly in the Deer Park area where 66mm of rain fell in one hour.
  • Heavy rain fell from storms over eastern and northeastern suburbs of Melbourne. Extensive flash flooding and damage to cars, homes and businesses was reported from Glenferrie to Kew. 66mm was recorded in 90 minutes in Kew, where large amounts of hail were also reported. Dunns Hill AWN near Mt Dandenong recorded 31.6mm in 30 minutes to 4pm.
  • Severe thunderstorms in Gippsland late in the afternoon gave 35mm in 35 minutes to Heyfield, 50mm in 90 minutes at Rosedale and 11.8mm in 6 minutes at East Sale.

On the 29th a thunderstorm uprooted large trees, lifted tiles off several houses and caused hail reportedly the size of cricket balls near Borden in the Central Wheat Belt.

Hail, strong winds in WA Wheat Belt

A severe thunderstorm near Borden, 80km ESE of Katanning in the Central Wheat Belt, dropped cricket ball sized hail and produced winds that uprooted large trees and lifted tiles of several houses.
