Hot in the east, cool in the west

Maximum temperature variation from normal today. BoM

Hot in the east, cool in the west

Temperature extremes between the east and west of the continent eased a little today, but it was still hot enough on the western Darling Downs of QLD to set a new March record. Texas, on the NSW/QLD border 90km ESE of Goondiwindi, recorded a top of 40.1°, its highest March maximum in 33 years. A small area to the south in NSW was close to record territory, while Guyra experienced an abnormally hot night for its 1332m altitude with a low of only 21.1, 11.2 above normal.

Cool, dry southeastlies crossing the southern WA and SA coasts blew a deck of low cloud far inland, keeping daytime temperatures 6 to 9 below average across a large area, while the cool airmass and jetstream cloud kept temperatures down in Central Australia.
