WA flash flood kills rescuer

Heavy storms caused flash flooding in the WA Pilbara overnight, leading to the death of an SES volunteer in the Karijini National Park, 250km south of Port Hedland. The volunteer was part of a small team rescuing a fallen British tourist from 50m deep Hancock Gorge, part of a complex of gorges in the Hamersley Range just south of Wittenoom Gorge. A wall of water estimated to be 4m high roared down the gorge during the rescue operation at about 4am, sweeping the volunteer away and leaving three others and the tourist clinging to a cliff above Kermit Pool. The volunteer's body was found two days later. Hamersley recorded 42mm in the 24 hours to 9am.

Torrential shower in Coffs Harbour NSW

An isolated shower dumped 31mm in an hour on Coffs Harbour early this evening. Radar showed a 50km long, narrow band of showers crossed the coast just after 6pm, giving the airport gauge 31mm in the hour to 7.30pm. The 24 hour to 9am Saturday total was 35.2mm, while nearby Glenreagh recorded 24.2, yet little of note was recorded anywhere else in the state. A weak surface trough on the North Coast was slow moving today, but the unusually heavy shower activity appears to have been the result of a small-scale local wind convergence zone.
