Seasonal heavy monsoonal rain across the WA, NT and QLD
tropics continues to give heavy falls: see wettest and downpours for
details. The 24 hour total of 62.6mm to 9am at Lucinda Point QLD this morning
was the station's highest December one-day total in a short 13-year record.
Cold and windy in NSW, VIC, TAS
Cold air dragged up from the south by a deep low in the southern Tasman dropped
temperatures well below the December average across NSW, VIC and TAS today.
All three states reported light snow in the high country, with the Thredbo
NSW observer commenting there was 5cm of snow on the ground above 1800m at
9 this morning. Minima in the Alps were around -3 to -5 and daytime temperatures
today didn't exceed 3C. Away from the Alps, much of NSW and NE VIC reported
daytime maxima betwteen 8 and 12 below average. Strong to gale force winds
continued to buffet TAS and VIC, and in particular the TAS East Coast and Bass
Strait, continuing to cause problems for Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race participants
(see story yesterday). An exceptionally large number
of locations in SE AUS reported high 24-hour wind runs this morning.
Damaging lightning around Taree NSW
A seemingly harmless thunderstorm that developed in a southerly airflow
in the lower Hunter Valley around 8am moved NE, crossing the Taree area about
11am. The storm gave pea-sized hail in Taree, but most dramatic was the lightning
associated with the storm. A massive bolt hit transmitters and electrical
supply equipment on Middle Brother Mountain, 30km NE of the town, halting
radio, television and mobile phone transmission to the NSW Mid North
Coast from Forster to Port Macquarie. Country
Energy crews worked around the clock to restore power while technicians repaired
damaged
communications
transmitters on the mountain.
In the same storm, the Manning River Times reported that lightning
hit a tree in Phillip Close, Wingham, resulting in a close call for the residents
of
the
house
next door. "Police said the residents saw a loud flash and heard a bang,
felt a tingling through their bodies, and saw the telephone on their kitchen
wall
'explode'
in a shower of sparks. No-one was seriously injured, however the residents
were in shock."
Flood
peaks move down northern NSW rivers
A succession of flood peaks is moving down northern NSW rivers following
intermittent heavy rain over the past 3 weeks. On the Gwydir, a peak of 7.8m
passed the Pallamallawa gauge at 3 this afternoon with minor flooding, and
the Yarraman Bridge gauge just north
of Moree round midnight this evening with a reading of 6.9m giving moderate
flooding. On the MacIntyre River, a peak of 4.2m at 6am Wednesday gave
minor flooding.
