Weather events

Storms cause minor damage in SE QLD

Widespread storms developed along the ranges from Gayndah south to the NSW border around 3 this afternoon, then moved slowly NE to cross the coast over the next four hours. The storms developed in a stationary trough lying from Mt Isa to Coolangatta.

Lightning strikes and trees blown onto powerlines blacked out around 7,500 properties on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland, parts of the northern Gold Coast and an area SW of Brisbane including Boonah. Five thousand homes in Bundaberg lost power between 11.30pm and 3am Tuesday. Two hundred homes in Redcliffe, Caboolture and Gympie were still without power on Tuesday morning. Lightning struck a Gympie service station, "knocking out the pumps and blowing the diesel bowser" according to an eyewitness, and putting it out of action for two days. Lightining also struck a Hervey Bay retirement village causing minor damage, while trees were brought down on the Bruce Highway at Kybong, 15km S of Gympie.

Heat and bushfires in WA

High temperatures streamed southward to bring maximum temperatures above 38C to much of WA today. An area of great heat has developed over the Pilbara and Kimberley over the weekend; today a trough down the west coast produced a broad northerly airflow across the state, advecting the heat to the South Coast.

The highest maxima relative to average were in the Great Southern and Central Wheatbelt. Ongerup's 39.8 was 12.7 above normal, while many others were over 10 above. Temperatures remained high in the Pilbara with Marble Bar recording a top of 46.6 after an overnight low of 33.4.
