Widespread storms bring best rain in a month to southern WA

Widespread thunderstorms brought rain to much of central and southern WA today. The falls were the first of any note since early March, with the top fall in the 24 hours to 9 this morning 33mm at Merredin in the Central Wheatbelt and to 9 on Friday morning 40mm at Cunyu, 200km ENE of Meekatharra. The storms, which affected all districts through the day, developed east of a deepening surface trough down the west coast. An area of middle atmosphere upmotion moved east across the area during the day, triggered by the arrival of an upper trough and cooler air. A good infeed of tropical moisture over the Central Coast over the past couple of days completed the scenario for some worthwhile storm falls.
