A magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra,
Indonesia, at one minute to midday EDT today generating one of the most destructive
tsunamis in history. The earthquake has been ranked by the US Geological Survey
at the fourth most powerful since 1900 and the most powerful since the 1964
Alaskan earthquake. The loss of life, mostly from the tsunami generated by
the undersea portion of the the earthquake, continues to climb but at 20 January
2005 was put at 220,000 making this the greatest loss of life from
a tsunami in recorded history.
Preliminary estimates are that the earthquake was caused when about 1,200km
of the India tectonic plate slid under the Burma plate, displacing the fault
plane by 15 metres and causing a sea bed rise of several metres.
The tsunami spread from the uplifted seabed at a speed of about 800km/h as
shown in this graphic (1)
or
this animation (2) (~600kb).
Energy from the tsunami caused minor sea level variations on the Australian
coastline and leaked under Australia into the Pacific Basin where crest-to-trough
fluctuations as great as 2.6m were reported at Manzanillo, Mexico, 65cm at
Jackson Bay, New Zealand, and 50cm at Chatham Islands and at Callao, Chile.
Along the
WA coast, tidal swings of up to 1m every 30 to 60 minutes this evening and
Monday morning swept 3 people in a boat out to sea near Busselton and broke
lobster boats from their
moorings
at Geraldton. On the mid-north coast, tides were up to 2m higher than usual,
causing damage to boats when moorings strained and minor flooding. In southern
TAS there were reports of 4 tides in 40 minutes and water flooding up creeks.
Tide gauges in SE QLD and as far north as Mackay registered fluctuations of
about 25cm and at Port Kembla NSW of 50cm. These compare with 10 to 15m in
Sumatra, 5 to 10m in Sri Lanka and 5m on the eastern Indian coast.
This report is brief for the magnitude of the event as AWN does
not usually report non-weather related events.

Eighty firefighters assisted by 4 helicopters and 2 water-bombing aircraft
today battled a 385 hectare bushfire on the eastern side of the Grampian Range
in VIC. The fire, which began late yesterday morning, is located in stringybark
country at Bomjinna, south of Pomonal, 10km SE of Halls Gap, and was not threatening
property. Changeable
winds and the fact that the area has not seen a bushfire since the 1950s
gave firefighters concern, however, and a further 200 Country Fire Authority
and
Department of
Sustainability
and
Environment
personnel
burnt
firebreaks
to contain the blaze which was finally brought under control on Tuesday afternoon.
In the southern Perth suburb of Wattle Grove, about 30 firefighters fought
a blaze that began around 7.30am. No properties were threatened, but a nearby
fragile wetland area was.
Heavy monsoon rains continue
Thunderstorms and areas of rain in the monsoon trough continue to give
heavy falls across northern NT and QLD. Among the heaviest 24
hour totals to 9am were 107.6mm at Maranboy Hill, 60km east of Katherine
in the NT, 95mm at Innisfail on the north QLD coast and 84.5mm at Sweers
Island in the SE Gulf of Carpentaria. Heavy downpours continued today
