In an unusual scenario, parts of northern WA today experienced record heat
while others enjoyed their coolest day in a month after early morning thunderstorms.
Learmonth, located on North West Cape with Exmouth Gulf to the east and the
Indian Ocean to the west, normally enjoys some relief from the constant heat
that grips northern WA during
the
build-up
to
the wet
season.
Today, it recorded a maximum temperature of 46.8C, 1.2 above its previous December
high in 30 years of record. A hot airmass had settled in for the night over
the West Gascoyne, to the SE of Learmonth, giving Nyang Station a record warm
December minimum of 32.3 (0.2 above the previous record in 30 years). A steady
ESE to SE wind advected this heat over Learmonth during the morning, raising
the temperature to 40C by 9.40am and 44 by 11.20am. It stayed continuously
above 44 until 3pm, when a weak northeasterly seabreeze delivered less torrid
temperatures in the mid to high 30s.
1,200km to the NE, the Kimberley region experienced its first mild day after
nearly a month of above average hot season heat. A broad area of thunderstorms
developed over the area overnight as a tongue of moist air curled in from the
northeast and instability increased as cooler air arrived aloft. Curtin airport,
35km SE of Derby, recorded 62.4mm in 78 minutes to 6am, of which 36.6 fell
in 19 minutes (details below). Fitzroy Crossing, 225km
ESE of Derby, recorded only 0.8mm, but widespread morning thunderstorm downdrafts
followed by a cloudy day kept the maximum temperature to a relatively mild
38.0 after 26 consecutive days of 40+ heat. In fact, since its first 40+ day
this season on 3 October, Fitzroy Crossing has recorded maxima below 40 on
only 7 days (the station was out of service and data lost on 5 days). The average
maximum for October was 41.7, November 40.9, and the first 20 days of December
43.2.
Severe
thunderstorm hits Barcaldine QLD
Thunderstorms developed east of a trough lying from NW QLD to Charleville
during the early afternoon. One particularly virulent storm swept through Barcaldine
about 3pm, bring strong winds, hail and 16mm of rain. The shire hall was partially
unroofed, powerlines were downed and trees, including one 50 years old, blown
down. Minor damage was reported to properties and a car was extensively damaged
when a tree fell on it. The Mayor of Barcaldine Shire, Councillor Rob Chandler,
told ABC Radio "Quite a lot of flying iron from the stable roofs was flying
about. A lot of trees came down, the big acacias and gum
trees and a lot of our big trees out on the Blackall road were just laid over
in a row, it was quite amazing."
