Storms give widespread heavy rain in QLD, NSW

Storms give widespread heavy rain in QLD, NSW

Thunderstorms again dumped heavy rain along the QLD North Coast, the NSW/QLD border areas and in the NSW Hunter Valley today. Goondiwindi, on the QLD/NSW border recorded its highest 24-hour March rainfall in 13 years of records this morning with 49mm in the gauge, 35 of which fell between 3 and 6am. Croppa Creek NSW, 65km south of Goondiwindi, recorded 130.2mm for the 24 hours, while Moree Airport was deluged with 33.2mm in half an hour to 6.30am. In SW QLD, Cunnamulla PO recorded 73mm between 3 and 6pm in a late afternoon thunderstorm. In the NSW Hunter Valley, Maitland recorded a 24-hour to 9am total of 88mm in overnight storms, while Murrurundi PO in the upper Hunter received 20mm between 9am and noon.

In late April 2004, the NSW Government provided natural disaster funding to repair damage caused by the event. The cost of lost crops and repairs to infrastructure was put at about $8 million. An area to the NE of Moree, around North Star and Tuloona, was said to be worst hit with up to 200mm of rain causing severe damage to roads, fencing, contour banks and dam walls on 20 properties. Landslides destroyed crops and grazing areas.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms eased on the Far North Coast of QLD, but Babinda PO still recorded 131mm for the 24 hours to 9am, and Cairns Airport received 79mm between noon and 6pm in a series of very heavy showers and a thunderstorm (details below).
