Weather events

Two large, slow-moving thunderstorm complexes dominated NSW weather today. The first had its genesis in Central Western NSW mid-afternoon yesterday and increased intensity over the next 15 hours as it moved slowly NNE across the North West Slopes. The second complex developed soon after noon today on the Central Tablelands before extending to cover much of the southeastern quarter of the state. Both complexes contained severe storm cells. Torrential rain renews flooding in northern inland NSW

The first of the two storm clusters shown in the animation above moved into the NSW North West Slopes and Northern Tablelands soon after midnight bringing torrential rain and strong wind gusts -- Tamworth Airport reported a gust of 85km/h at 2.16am. The main feature of this storm complex however was rainfall, with Warialda PO, 60km WNW of Inverell, reporting 93.8mm in the 24 hours to 9am, its heaviest December one-day total in 123 years of record. Much of this appears to have fallen in a few hours around dawn. Inverell Research Centre AWS recorded 35.8mm of its 24 hour total of 46mm in 2 hours 5 minutes to 7am, while the Inverell town (Raglan Street) observer reported thunderstorms at the 3am, 6am and 9am observations with all but 0.2mm of the station's 50mm 24-hour total falling between 3am and 9am. Elsewhere in the area, flood network rainfall reports showed Gravesend recorded 57mm between 3 and 6am for a 24 hour total of 68mm while Tingha reported 42mm 3am to 6am for a 24 hour total of 60mm. See Wettest and Downpours below for more details.

The heavy rain falling on already wet catchments produced renewed flooding in the Gwydir River at Gravesend, where a peak of 7.3m was reached late morning with minor flooding. The duration and intensity of the storm complex produced a memorable light and sound show for northern slopes and tablelands residents, and also a number of power outages. The storm complex continued to be active as it crossed SE QLD during the morning and early afternoon, finally dying out west of Brisbane late afternoon.

More widespread storms in NSW

The second storm complex shown in the animation above developed first on the NSW Central Tablelands. A cluster of severe storms moved lazily northeastwards from this area, one over far southwestern Sydney and a second more long-lived severe cell over the Bilpin/Kurrajong area, then NE over the Yengo National Park and the western Central Coast. Around 3,000 homes lost power on the Central Coast and a few hundred in the Bilpin/Kurrajong area. Hail to 2cm was reported from Blackheath. As can be seen in the animation, the storm developed a number of centres across SE NSW and extended briefly into the central north of the state before moving generally NE and dying out early Saturday morning along a line from around Moree to offshore Coffs Harbour.

Heavy monsoonal falls spread in northern AUS

A broad monsoonal trough operating over northern Australia again produced some heavy thunderstorm falls over the NT Top End and around the Gulf of Carpentaria. Batchelor Airport in the NT reported a wind gust of 109km/h in a storm around dawn. Among the higher totals for the 24 hours to 9am were 118mm at Herbert Vale, 210km SW of Burketown and 87.2mm at Mt Isa in QLD. Storms built up again later in the day giving some moderate (for the wet season) totals across the Top End and around the Gulf, which are listed in downpours.
