Sydney water supply ends year on a low note

Sydney's Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80% of the city's water, dropped to a record low level of 38.6% of capacity at year's end. The smaller coastal dams have fared somewhat better with recent rainfall so that the overall water supply is currently 43.4% of capacity, down 13.1% in the past year.

Monsoon brings heavy falls to northern NT and QLD

Heavy rain yesterday and overnight, including some torrential thunderstorm falls, produced a large crop of reports between 50 and 150mm for the 24 hours to 9am (see wettest below). In the Territory, the heaviest falls, as reported yesterday, were along the Arnhem north coast with Milingimbi recording 211.8mm and McCluer Island 202.8. Heavy rain was also reported from the QLD North Coast where Topaz Alert and Daintree Tea both reported 144.0mm. An isolated torrential fall of 403.8mm was reported at Mossman South. This is so far above neighbouring falls as to be suspicious, but the Bureau of Meteorology did not remove the fall from their official 24 hour rainlist so it has been left in the AWN list until more detailed quality control (and postal reports from surrounding stations) are available.

Rain across Arnhem Land and the Cape York Peninsula increased today as the monsoon trough became more active. A low in the trough near Darwin, which has been a weak feature on the charts for the past two days, also gained some strength through the day, swinging stronger, moisture-laden N to NW winds across the Arnhem coast. Some of the heavier falls from the full downpours list below included: Jabiru Airport 63mm in 3 hours to noon, Point Stuart 100mm in 6 hours to 3.30pm, McCluer Island 105mm in 3 hours to 3am, Douglas River 92mm in 6 hours to 9pm, and at Port Keats on the western NT coast, 116mm in 6 hours to 9pm of which 81.2mm fell in 65 minutes to 6.30pm.

On Cape York Peninsula in QLD, Weipa received 93mm in 3 hours to 6pm (55.2 in 30 minutes to 4.30pm) and Lockhart River recorded 203mm of relatively steady heavy rain in 12 hours to 9pm.

Severe storms in WA as colder air arrives

Isolated storms bringing spectacular lightning, strong winds and heavy rain occurred this morning along the boundary between the heat trough exiting WA to the east and cooler southeasterlies moving in behind. Leonora recorded 19mm between 3 and 6am and Laverton 44mm between 6 and 9am, while the Bureau observer at Bulga Downs, 160km WNW of Leonora, was moved to report a "spectacular light show" late last night. Maximum temperatures today were 8 to 12C below average under the cloud cover in SE WA, Kalgoorlie only just reaching 20C. Farther east at Balgair, the top today was 22.4 compared to 41.1 yesterday. With strong, middle atmosphere winds blowing across the region because of the marked temperature contrast, further storms developed during the afternoon, one at Mt Magnet giving a wind gust of 109km/h at 2.22pm and a storm rain total of 20mm of which 10mm fell in 7 minutes. The winds proved too much for a historic 80-year old woolshed on Wooleen Station, 200km NW of Mt Magnet. What the owners described as winds of up to 200km/h flattened the irreplaceable barrel-roof vaulted shed and uprooted trees around the homestead.

Hot weather moves into SE AUS

The hot airmass that has been brewing in WA for nearly a week arrived in the southeast today, giving maximum temperatures 8 to 14 above average to southern SA, western VIC and parts of TAS. Normally chilly Mt Wellington behind Hobart recorded a top of 24.8, 14.4 above average, the greatest temperature anomaly in the country.
