Early winter heat covers the nation

Maximum temperature variations from normal over the 8 days to today. BoM

Early winter heat covers the nation

Most of Australia has experienced above average temperatures continuously for the past 8 days. The remarkable sequence of temperature anomaly maps at right shows the tiny percentage of the continent -- the areas shaded green -- that have recorded below average maximum temperatures each day. Minimum temperatures have also been above average to nearly the same extent, with between 80 and 95% of the country above average during the same period. Today saw the toppling of an unlikely maximum temperature record, with Onslow Airport's reading of 32.3 breaking a 38 year record for June maxima.
