Bushfire blankets Perth in smoke

Light southerly winds behind a weak front pushed a pall of bushfire smoke across Perth this afternoon. The smoke came from a fire that was first detected this morning burning near the Scott River, just east of Augusta in the state's far southwest. The fire had burnt through 820ha of inaccessible nature reserve by late afternoon.

Monsoonal rain returns to northern QLD, NT

The monsoon trough drifted close to the tip of Cape York Peninsula and the NT North Coast today, increasing rain and showers in both areas. Cairns Airport recorded 76mm between 3am and 3pm, while for the 24 hours to 9am, Tully to the south recorded 179mm and Daintree Tea to the north recorded 175mm. Large totals for the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday, most of which fell today, included 160mm at Mt Sophia, 30km SSE of Cairns, and 134mm at Babinda PO. In the Territory Top End for the second day in a row there were several reports of 24-hour totals between 50 and 100mm at coastal locations.

Rain, storms move to coastal NSW

Thunderstorms that developed along a line from Batemans Bay to Goulburn around 2pm moved northeast over the next 5 hours before decaying offshore from Wollongong. One storm cell that was particularly active electrically crossed the coast south of Nowra, blacking out 3,000 homes in and around Sussex Inlet. A rain area that developed on the Northern Tablelands mid afternoon moved east and intensified during the evening giving heavy rain along the Mid North Coast from Kempsey north to Evans Head. Kempsey recorded 36mm between 6 and 11pm, and Coffs Harbour 21.8mm in the hour to 11.30pm.
