Thunderstorms developed explosively across central southern QLD soon after
1.30 this afternoon in moist unstable air to the east of a trough lying through
the state's west. By 6pm, a triangular area bounded by Rockhampton, Longreach
and Dubbo in NSW was experiencing widespread storms.
The most violent to hit a town arrived in Roma shortly before 3pm, giving
a peak wind gust of 104km/h at 2.47pm and depositing 20.6mm in the raingauge
in 20 minutes to 3pm. Wind tore off part of the roof of the town's historic
Grand Hotel, and brought down trees, powerlines and signs in the area, including
around Wallumbilla, 40km to the east. Both Roma and Wallumbilla lost power
during the storm, the latter not being restored for five hours.
An unusual late morning storm gave Rockhampton 28.8mm in the hour to midday,
16.6mm falling in just 14 minutes.
Isolated heavy rain across the tropics
Though the wet season is yet to begin, thunderstorms in the WA Kimberley and
across the NT Top End are producing isolated heavy totals, while a moist onshore
stream with some embedded storms has produced a few deluges in Far North Queensland.
Doongan, in the North Kimberley, received its heaviest 24 hour fall since
1 January with 76.0mm in the gauge at 9am, though most of this is likely to
have been recorded in an area of heavy rain and storms late yesterday evening.
An afternoon thunderstorm gave Weipa on Cape York Peninsula 42.4mm in the
hour to 5pm, but it was wetter in the onshore stream on the eastern side of
the peninsula where Daintree Tea reported 134mm for the 24
hours to 9am Thursday,
and a score of stations on the QLD North Coast recorded between 50 and 80mm
during the same period.
Heat,
fires in SA
Hot northerlies pushed maximum temperatures over 40C along SA's west coast
and Eyre Peninsula today, with a top recording of 41.0 at Ceduna, 14.8 above
average. Other high readings are below.
A fire that started late afternoon in canola plantations along the Playford
Highway on Kangaroo Island was brought under control by 50 firefighters
aided by
a
water bomber
overnight. The fire at one stage threatened a pine plantation.
NSW
Namoi and Gwydir flood peaks join
Flood peaks in the Gwydir and Namoi Rivers that resulted from the heavy rain
of 9 to 11 December are now converging on Walgett. The Gwydir flood peak has
now entered the Barwon upstream of the town, while the Namoi peak is approaching
the town from the SE. The Namoi joins the Barwon just a few kilometres NW of
Walgett. Minor flooding is occurring around the town, with levels lower than
expected because inflows from Thalaba Creek and the lower Gwydir Valley were
overestimated. Near major flooding is still predicted for the middle Darling
around Louth and Tilpa mid to late January.
