Another
icy night in QLD, NT
Minimum temperatures were below normal across the whole of QLD and
the NT as well as the eastern half of WA this morning as a second wave of
cold, dry southern air swept into the tropics. In SE and Far North
QLD and around the base of the NT Top End, minima were 8 to 11 below the
average, with the most unusual lows being recorded in the tropics. Ingham,
south of Cairns, had a minimum of 5.4, just 0.2 shy of a 33 year record.
Te Kowai, just west
of Mackay, reported a minimum temp for the past 3 days of 1.0 which probably
occurred this morning. That's colder than any June minimum since at least
1965 and not far off
their all time low of -1.1 in 95 years of records. Proserpine
Airport reported the nation's greatest negative departure with its reading
of 1.3
some 11.4
below average.
In the southeast, Warwick recorded the state's lowest minimum of -6.9. This
beat the previous lowest for the new AWS in the past 5 years, but also was
lower than
the
-6.6 June
record
set in the
24
years up to 1994 at the Dragon Street station. Prior to that, the old Hermitage
site near the present AWS set a record June low of -10.6 in 1965. Oakey Aero,
with 31 years of record,
was
1.1
above
the previous
June coldest
with
a low of -5.6. Farther north, Town of 1770, on the coast 75km ESE of Gladstone,
set a new June record of 6.8 in 16 years of observations. Amberley Airport,
west
of Brisbane,
recorded -3.3, 10.3 below average. Several of the
automatic
weather
stations
that came
online
in
1997
-- Port Macquarie,
Gold
Coast Seaway
and
Yeppoon --
also
recorded
their
coldest June temperatures.
