Downpours in Far North and SE QLD

Downpours in Far North and SE QLD

Heavy rain for QLD in April occurred in the state's far north and far southeast today. A tropical low made landfall on the far north Cape York Peninsula early this morning. It moved erratically in the area during the day before resuming its westward movement into the Gulf of Carpentaria this evening. A small area of heavy rain moved westwards across the peninsula, first giving Lockhart River on the east coast 40mm between 9 last night and 3 this morning, then giving Weipa on the west coast 67mm between midnight and 6am. Weipa's 24 hour to 9am total of 72.4 was the station's highest April one-day total in 11 years of computerised record.

In SE QLD, weak storms associated with the tail end of a cold front moving into the Tasman Sea produced some heavy showers. Amberley, 35km WSW of the Brisbane CBD, recorded 19.4mm in 23 minutes after 5pm.
