Frosty morning across eastern AUS
Muggy night in southern WA

Frosts were likely (above) in areas shaded grey (below 3°) while sub-zero temperatures extended along the Great Divide from SE SA into SE QLD. In terms of departure from normal (below), most of the continent was 4° or more below with only SW WA going well against the trend .

Frosty morning across eastern AUS

Frost level minima covered much of NSW, VIC and TAS along with large parts of QLD and SA this morning. Cold air from the change early in the week has pushed north into the tropics and, along with clear skies under the ensuing high, has produced well below normal overnight temperatures. No records fell, but unusual lows in QLD were 3.3 at Kairi Research Station on the Atherton Tablelands 40km SSW of Cairns, 5.4 at Proserpine Airport, -3.9 at Oakey and -4.0 at Warwick and Stanthorpe in the state's southeast. In the Territory, Daly Water's 6.0 was 7.3 below average.

Muggy night in southern WA

In contrast to the rest of the country, southern WA residents threw off the doonas last night as a cold front fizzled. The change weakened rapidly after giving good rain to the Southwest yesterday morning, and failed to flush out the unseasonable heat that set June records yesterday. Many centres recorded minima that were more above the average than their maxima were above average yesterday. Salmon Gum's low of 15.9 was 10.3 above normal. With some rain having fallen across most of the Southwest, Great Southern and southern Wheatbelt it was not only a warm night but a humid one.
