Further heavy showers on North QLD Coast

Heavy rain fell late this afternoon and evening in the Tully and Johnstone River catchments around Tully. The rain comes on top of heavy falls yesterday. In the Tully basin, Murray Flats flood alert recorded 151mm and Euramo alert 106 in the 6 hours to 9pm, Jarra Creek alert 92 for the 6 hours to midnight and Maalan Road alert 69mm in the 3 hours to midnight. In the Johnstone basin, Topaz alert recorded 93mm, Millaa Millaa alert 83 and Greenhaven alert 82 in the 6 hours to midnight.

Cold in northern NSW

Minimum temperatures in parts of central and northern NSW this morning were well below average. Cool, dry air moved into the region around the low that brought heavy rain to VIC yesterday, while ridging from a high near Adelaide produced stability in the form of a marked temperature inversion several thousand feet above sea level. Temperatures plummeted in areas below the inversion, with notorious frost-hollow Woolbrook, 25km west of Walcha, by far the coldest place on the continent with a minimum of -5.0, 10.4 below normal. Collarenebri, Murrurundi, Walgett and Coonamble were all between 9 and 10 below. Coonabarabran town situated in the Castlereagh River valley recorded -1.8 while the town's airport, on a ridge 7km south of town and 138m higher only dropped to 6.7.
