Severe storms strike SE QLD again

Widespread damage and power cuts occurred in SE QLD today as severe thunderstorms packing storm-force wind gusts, torrential rain and large hail moved northwards late afternoon and early evening. Hundreds of trees were brought down onto houses and powerlines resulting in power loss to 90,000 consumers. Some 30,000 were still without power the next morning with many others suffering eratic power as electricity maintenance crew struggled to repair the damaged infrastructure. The strongest recorded wind gusts were 102km/h at Archerfield, 12km south of Brisbane CBD, 98 at Double Island Point Lighthouse and 91 at Toolara 30km NE of Gympie and at Warwick on the Darling Downs. Brisbane Airport recorded a gust of 83km/h. Inland from the Sunshine Coast, Nanango reported heavy rain and wind damage to trees, while farther inland still Tarong power statoin was struck by lightning. Large hail was reported from the Sunshine Coast, to cricket ball size near Caloundra and golfball size at Kawana Waters. Reports of heavy downpours are given below and included 10mm in 7 minutes at Nambour. While rain was briefly heavy in many areas, totals overall were patchy with an isolated heavy maximum recording for the 24 hours to 9am 29 January of 107mm at Rosedale, 50km WNW of Bundaberg.

The persistent storms across SE QLD are the result a blocking pattern over eastern Australia. This has seen very warm, humid north to northwesterly winds blowing over SE QLD which today were enhanced by a developing surface trough, added instability from cooler air aloft and strong winds in the middle atmosphere.

More reports of large hail in NSW

There were reports of hail up to 5cm diameter at Korora near Coffs Harbour today. Other large hail reports were 2.5cm at Colo Heights and Wisemans Ferry, both north of Windsor.
