Weather events

Seasonal heavy monsoonal rain across the WA, NT and QLD tropics continues to give heavy falls: see wettest and downpours for details.

Record cold December night in northern NSW, SE QLD

Parts of the NSW Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes and the QLD Darling Downs and Maranoa recorded record low December minima this morning. The record lows follow an unusually intense burst of cold, dry southern air. Of the records set, the 40 year old records at Glen Innes and Inverell are the most significant.

Strong, cold winds close NSW beaches

Unseasonably strong south to southeasterly winds built up heavy seas onto the NSW South and Illawarra Coasts today. In the Wollongong area, 16 of the 17 patrolled beaches from Stanwell Park to Windang were closed by a surf estimated at 2.5 to 3.5m high.

Lightning responsible for Goulburn NSW fires

Rural Fire Services Operations Officer for the NSW Southern Tablelands Zone, Ian Kennerley, told the Goulburn Post that many of the numerous fires to break out around Goulburn during the Christmas/New Year period were caused by lightning. "During the recent storms brigades have attended numerous lightning related fires, some confined to just one tree while others burnt small patches of grassland or undergrowth surrounding the strike area," Mr Kennerley said. "Three fires believed to be lightning started occurred in the heavily timbered and rugged country north of Taralga."

A bushfire today at Watson Park west of Goulburn was attended by units from nine brigades, burning through 120 hectares before it was quelled.
