A foot of snow starts the ski season

A foot of snow starts the ski season

Blizzard conditions yesterday and steady snow in low temperatures overnight gave a 20 to 25cm cover across NSW skifields this morning. Charlotte Pass (Kosciuszko Chalet) reported 38mm of melted precipitation in the gauge and 25cm of level snow at 9am, while Perisher Valley had 40mm in the gauge and an overnight minimum of -8.0. Nearby Perisher Blue reported 20cm level snow at 7am and a further 8cm through the day. To the frustration of the multitudes that headed for the snowless snowfields for the official Queens Birthday Weekend opening last weekend, the snow began falling early yesterday afternoon, just as they were preparing to leave. Perisher's Dave Kerwin told ABC Radio that snow depths on the Main Range were around 20cm, the snow was "beautifully dry" and the resort had been transformed overnight. Falls in the Victorian Alps were lighter, with melted gaugings of 17, 20 and 25mm respectively at Mt Hotham, Mt Buller and Falls Creek.
