Strong winds cause damage in Hobart

Strong winds cause damage in Hobart

A cold front passing through Hobart early this morning brought damaging winds to the city. In Sandy Bay, just SE of the CBD, a massive gum was torn from the ground, roots and all, while at least three other trees were felled around 2am. Five boats at the nearby Derwent Sailing Squadron boatyard were seriously damaged when thrown about by the wind, one having its mast snapped. The strong winds in the city were very localised, though storm force gusts were recorded farther afield, with Maatsuyker Island registering a top of 137km/h at 2.18am and Mt Wellington summit 113km/h at 12.47am. Some strong 10-minute average winds were reported by AWSs, too, with Scotts Peak Dam in the state's Southwest recording 106km/h at midnight. Snow fell on the Central Plateau overnight, with 1cm on the ground at Lake St Clair at 9am.
