Gales, heavy snow in TAS

Heavy snow falling as low as 400m asl closed major highways in TAS this morning. Police closed the main Midland Highway connecting Hobart and Launceston when snow and ice made it impassable at Spring Hill near Jericho mid morning. The highway reopened during the afternoon. Central and southwestern parts of the state received heavy snow, with 15cm reported on the ground at Lake St Clair and 9cm at Tarraleah at 9am. The Marlborough and Lake Highways were only open to 4WD vehicles, while extreme caution was being urged on the Lyell Highway and the Gordon River Road. The Mt Wellington summit road and the Lake Dobson Road were both closed.

Blizzard conditions would have been experienced in highland areas for part of the night as a cold front swept through, bringing storm force gusts to exposed areas. Maatsuyker Island recorded a top gust of 150km/h just before midday while Scotts Peak Dam, on the southern side of Lake Pedder in the Southwest, recorded a gust of 130km/h just after midday. Seventeen hundred kilometres of wind passed the anemometer at Strahan Airport on the west coast in the 48 hours to 9am Tuesday, an average of 35.4km/h.

Fires burn in northern and southern QLD

Bushfires threatened property west of Townsville today, while blazes continued to cause concern around Brisbane. The Townsville fire broke out near Bluewater, about 30km west along the coast from Townsville, during the morning, threatened houses during the afternoon and was not brought under control until late evening. Around Brisbane, fires flared near Samford, 20km to the NW, and at Bonogin and Mudgeeraba behind the Gold Coast to the south. Numerous small fires, believed to be the work of an arsonist, have occurred in the Kenilworth area north of Brisbane.
