Storm-force winds cause damage across TAS

Storm-force winds cause damage across TAS

The strong westerlies that have been buffeting TAS were further strengthened overnight by the formation of a small secondary low close to the south coast. The low's attendant cold front swept across the state late morning. Tasmanian police and the SES received numerous reports of mostly minor damage across the state, with many trees uprooted and a house unroofed at St Mary's on the East Coast. Power was lost in over 6000 properties. Five thousand lost power in the northeast due to problems with the Scottsdale substation and a pole fire. Another thousand were without power at Gawler, North Motton, Preston and Gunns Plains in the northwest after strong winds damaged a transformer. The wind also brought down powerlines at about 30 places in and around Hobart, blacking out several hundred users including the Mt Nelson Primary School which had to be closed for the day. The rising Huon River threatened to inundate the Tahune Bridge, and the road, which accesses the Tahune Airwalk, was closed.

The highest wind gust reported by Bureau of Meteorology stations was 157.3km/h on the summit of Mt Wellington at 6.28am. The CSIRO TERSS facility on Droughty Point, 10km SE of Hobart CBD, recorded a maximum gust of 155km/h. Other high gusts were Maatsuyker Island 146, Scotts Peak Dam 144, Hartz Mountain 124, Mt Read 122, Cape Bruny 105.5, Tasman Island 102, and Hobart City and Tunnack 100. Just as impressive were some of the daily windruns for the 24 hours to 9am Friday. These measure the total wind passing the station's anemometer for the 24 hour period, and included Devonport Airport 986km (an 24 hour average of 41.1km/h), Eddystone Point 950 (39.6), Liawenee 897 (37.4)Cressy Research Station 864 (36.0), Sheffield 834 (34.7) and Hobart City 764 (31.8).
