Low
temperatures continue to set records
May minimum temperature records fell in three states this morning
as low night and day temperatures continued nearly nationwide.
In WA, Murchison, 600km N of Perth, set a new 14-year May low of 1.8. On the
NSW Mid North Coast, Kempsey's minimum of 1.0 was its lowest May reading in
31 years while Mt Seaview in the mountains 60km to the southwest recorded -0.6,
its lowest May minimum in 35 years. Oakey on the Western Darling Downs of QLD
plummeted to -4.1, its coldest May morning in 31 years of record and 12.5° below
normal for May. On the western outskirts of Brisbane, Amberley reported a low
of -0.8, 11 below.
The coldest places in the country were again on the NSW Northern Tablelands
where Woolbrook reported a numbing -8.9, closely followed by -8.2 at Glen Innes
Airport and -6.9 at Armidale Uni.
Daytime temperatures were again exceptionally low over northern WA and western
NT . In WA,
the area of low cloud and cold surface temperatures that has been drifting
northwest then west from Central Australia over the past few days moved into
the Pilbara today giving maxima of 17.1 at Marble Bar and 18.6 on the coast
at Mandora, both over 13 below normal. Marble Bar's record low May maximum
in nearly 50 years was 16.2, while Mandora's over 38 years has been 17.4. Broome
recorded a high of 19.3, the second day in a row the town has broken its previous
62 year May record. The second blob of cold maxima shown on the map, over the
Victoria River region of the NT, resulted in a 15° below average reading
of 17.0 at Victoria River Downs. |
