Violent storms cause damage, flooding in SE QLD

Storms brought strong wind gusts, large hail and flash flooding to the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and west to Warwick. A late afternoon storm brought down trees in the Currumbin Valley behind the Gold Coast where Gold Coast Seaway AWS recorded a gust of 87km/h. The storms moved northwards through Ipswich, where Amberley reported a top gust of 83km/h, a few houses were unroofed, and golfball sized hail was reported. In the Brisbane metro area, heavy rain brought flash flooding in Fortitude Valley, Woolloongabba, Oxley and Coorparoo with some cars swamped and their occupants having to be rescued. Golfball sized hail was also reported from Warwick, and at Kenilworth behind the Sunshine Coast trees were brought down on caravans in a caravan park.

Heavy rain, hail from NSW storms

Storms brought heavy rain and hail along the NSW coast during the late afternoon. The heaviest recording was at Corndale 13km NE of Lismore on the North Coast where 54mm was reported in 30 minutes. Williamtown RAAF Base north of Newcastle recorded 25.6mm in 27 minutes. Golfball sized hail was reported at Orama in the Bellinger Valley 45km SW of Coffs Harbour and 2 to 3cm diameter hail at Gloucester and in the Illawarra at Shellharbour, Albion Park and Robertson.
