Wintry weather in TAS

A cold front swept across TAS this morning accompanied by storm-force wind gusts and heavy rain showers. Wind gusted to 82km/h at Strahan at 1am, 117 on Tasman Island and 115 atop Mt Wellington at 3am, and 89km/h at Devonport Airport just after 7am. Heavy rain fell ahead of the front, with Strathgordon (Lake Pedder) village recording 44mm between 3pm yesterday and 9am today.

Temperatures dropped steadily behind the front, with the AWS on the summit of Mt Read, east of Zeehan, recording a midday temperature of 0.1C. Hail accompanied showers during the afternoon in south coastal areas, and the Cape Bruny observer reported late afternoon that the snowline on the southern mountains was down to 800m. Snow fell on the Central Plateau down to the 700m level overnight into Wednesday.

Strong winds affected southern VIC during the morning also. Wind gust details are given below.
