Heavy rain, storms in NSW, SE QLD

Rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am (above) and for the week to 9am Monday 24 November, which covers the full extent of this rain event (below). Rain today and on Sunday accumulated useful totals of 50 to 100mm along most of the NSW coast. BoM

Thunderstorms moved across the NSW Northern Tablelands and coast last night, then degenerated into steady rain during the early morning hours bringing some heavy falls. Glen Innes Agricultural Research Station recorded by far its highest November one-day total in 91 years, with 88.4mm to 9am eclipsing the previous record of 60.0. What is more, 76mm of that total fell in the 12 hours to 9am. Another high and unusual total was 106.6mm at Point Lookout, 30km WSW of Dorrigo, which at 1550 metres is the highest point in northeastern NSW. The mountain and the neighbouring Bellinger River Valley record the highest rainfall in the state, but usually in wet east to southeasterly conditions. Most of the 106.6mm fell in three storms moving from the west that gave the gauge 23mm between noon and 3pm yesterday, 40mm between 3pm and 6pm and a further 36mm between 9pm and midnight last night. Coffs Harbour Airport recorded 27.2mm in the hour to midnight from this third storm. Other heavy 24 hour to 9am totals were 94.8mm at Kings Plains, 30km WNW of Glen Innes, and 89.0 at Majors Creek and 86.5 at Wittitrin, both inland from Kempsey.

With a low pressure centre in southern inland NSW and a trough across NE NSW and SE QLD both showing little sign of movement during the day, storms and patchy rain continued to fall across much of NSW. Sporadic early morning storms in western NSW and southern inland QLD gave scattered heavy falls, such as 7.2mm in 10 minutes at Miles QLD and 19mm in 1 hour at Bourke NSW. 300 homes in Ivanhoe NSW were blacked out for many hours when lightning struck powerlines and boggy ground slowed access for repair crews.

A line of thunderstorms developed on the Southwest and Central Western Plains around midday, then drifted eastwards to the coast over the next 12 hours. One storm in this complex dumped a remarkable 20.4mm in 6 minutes on Tocal Ag College just south of Paterson in the lower Hunter Valley around 7.30pm. Another area of storms developed during the afternoon over SE QLD, giving Gold Coast Seaway 28.6mm in one hour. Other heavy falls in NSW and QLD are listed below.
