All BoM

It was another intensely cold morning across much of eastern and central Australia this morning. Croydon QLD, close to the Gulf of Carpentaria, recorded a low of 5.2, its lowest August minimum in 39 years, while at the other end of the continent Bombala's -8.0 broke a 35 year August record. If validated, Proserpine Airport's minimum of zero is its lowest temperature for any month in a relatively short 14 year record. Records and other low temperatures are given below.

A factor in the low morning temperatures has been the extremely low humidity over much of the continent. Today, sub-zero afternoon dew points were common away from the coast, and dropped to -20 and below in the Centre. At its 2 and 3pm observations, Giles, about 400km west of Uluru, recorded a temperature of 22.5 and a dew point of -31.5, giving a relative humidity of less than 2%.

A vicious cold front was about to make landfall on SW WA late this evening. Winds ahead of the front averaged 98km/h at Cape Leeuwin at 8pm with gusts to 121km/h. Rottnest Island recorded gusts to 100km/h at 11pm and other strong gusts are given below. A line of showers began moving up the coast from the SSW mid-evening giving torrential rain: Cape Leeuwin recorded 12.6mm in 15 minutes just after 8pm, Busselton had 33mm in the hour to 10pm and Rocky Gully, 90km ESE of Manjimup, registered 6.4mm in just 4 minutes about 9.30pm.
