Heavy QLD rain as ex-TC Beni comes ashore
NEWSBITS: Containment breakthrough on Vic/Snowy fires as Kosciuszko Park reopens; Northern WA heat continues to break records

Heavy QLD rain as ex-TC Beni comes ashore

Former Tropical Cyclone Beni, which dropped below cyclone strength yesterday evening, died just before making landfall near Mackay early this afternoon. At 10am EST it was located just 50km ENE of Mackay and drifting slowly SW, but it does not show up on the Mackay barometer trace and appears to have been absorbed into the flow. There was little wind impact, though both Agnes Waters and Town of 1770 lost power late in the day.

The area of torrential rain that was in the Nambour area yesterday moved NW up the coast overnight following ex-Beni's southern flank. Gladstone received the heaviest of the rain, with 325mm recorded at the airport in the 30 hours to 3 this afternoon. 102mm fell during the 3 hours before midnight last night. The Bureau of Meteorology Radar station at Gladstone recorded its all-time highest 24-hour rainfall with 248.0mm falling to 9am. However, the radar station record is only 44 years; by comparison, the highest one-day total at the Post Office, with 72 years of records between 1872 and 1958 is 478.3mm. A detailed analysis of the Gladstone rain is in Downpours below. As the map below shows, most of the coast from Brisbane north to Rockhampton recorded more than 50mm in the 24 hours to 9am, with good falls of 25 to 50mm extending inland to the Western Darling Downs and eastern Central Highlands.

It gives some indication of the dryness of SE QLD that only isolated minor and flash flooding has been reported over the past two days despite widespread local falls of 100 to 300mm.

NEWSBITS

Two milestones were reached in the massive battle against the Alpine fires in eastern VIC and southeastern NSW today. Containment lines to the west of Delegate in NSW met up with those being put in place by Victorian firefighters in the Dellicknora area, giving a continuous containment line of over 300km stretching west to near Mt Buffalo. Fire authorities also announced that limited areas of the Kosciuszko National Park would reopen to visitors this evening. The roads to Thredbo and Charlotte Pass would be open, along with the track to Mt Kosciuszko and the Thredbo chairlift; however remaining areas of the park remain closed until roads, trails and walking tracks have been assessed for rehabilitation and potential dangers such as falling trees.

Kimberley Research Station, 20km NW of Kununurra in the WA North Kimberley, which broke its February maximum temperature record yesterday, broke it again today when the maximum thermometer recorded 42.1.
