Snow falls in WA
Record cold night on Lord Howe Island

A frigid airmass from well south of the continent sweeps northwards over WA. Above: Surface charts for 4am, 10am, 4pm and 10pm today show the cold front sweeping east into SA. BoM. Below: Animation of hourly infrared satellite images shows the progress of the cold airmass across southern WA from its arrival at Cape Leeuwin around 2pm WST yesterday to 9pm tonight. Weatherzone, BoM. (GMS-5 backup with GOES-9 operated by the joint effort of JMA and US NOAA NESDIS over the Western Pacific)

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that snow fell on WA's highest peak, Bluff Knoll, during yesterday and today's cold outbreak. The peak, in the Stirling Ranges 90km north of Albany, is one of the few places in WA that receives snow, and that only rarely. The Bureau's Gary Boterhoven was quoted by ABC Radio as estimating that 30 per cent of the mountain's peak was covered, making it one of the better falls he was aware of.

The Meteorological Office at Lord Howe Island's airport recorded its lowest July minimum temperature in 15 years this morning with a reading of 7.3C. Until 1988, the weather office was located on the slope above the lagoon to service flying boat weather needs. During the 50 years that weather records are available in computerised form from that site, the lowest recorded temperature in any month was 8.0C. The new site, used since the opening of the airport in 1988 is between the beach and the runway and has recorded minima as low as 5.9. This morning's dip in temperature occurred around midnight when the wind that is normally a constant feature on the island dropped briefly allowing cold air to pool on the airfield in a broad area of colder air covering the Tasman Sea.
