Heavy storm falls across the tropics
NEWSBITS: Heat continues its slow eastward movement in WA; QLD flood crests near the sea

There was some scattered but intense rainfall across the QLD and NT tropics overnight and into today, often associated with thunderstorms. On the QLD Central Highlands, Clermont recorded 81mm in the 12 hours to 3am, while 75km to the ENE, Dysart's 24 hour total of 74.6 is likely to have fallen over the same period. Farther north, Chillagoe, 130km W of Cairns, reported 127.4 for the 24 hours to 9am, while Kowanyama Airport, on the western side of Cape York Peninsula, recorded 81.4mm in 2 hours to 5pm. A thunderstorm gave a 102km/h wind gust to Julia Creek Airport mid-afternoon. Showers yesterday afternoon and overnight storms gave Darwin's Geriatric Park 80mm to 9am, while in Kakadu National Park, Jabiru recorded 45.8mm in 35 minutes to 5pm this afternoon.

NEWSBITS

The trough that has been ducting a slowly eastward moving band of warm northeasterlies over southern WA sped up today, but still gave an area around Esperance and northwards top temperatures between 36 and 40°. The maximum of 37.3 at Esperance was 11.1 above average. There were widespread thunderstorms around the trough overnight, with Gascoyne Junction reporting a heavy duststorm and Ongerup reporting hail with the storms.

In the Fitzroy River, the main flood waters are in the Yaamba area where river levels are close to their peak with minor to moderate flooding. River levels are rising slowly downstream at Rockhampton with minor flooding. The Fitzroy River at The Gap peaked at 10.97 metres at 11.30pm today and minor flooding is slowly easing. In the Burnett River, flood levels have all dropped below minor, with the peak now in the Bundaberg area.
