Heavy thunderstorms graze NSW Central Coast

A very moist, unstable southerly airstream produced a procession of active thunderstorms off the NSW coast between Wollongong and Newcastle overnight and today. Several of them grazed the coastline bringing torrential rain. The storm cells generally moved NNE parallel to the coast a short way out to sea, veering more to the ENE farther away from the coast. The situation in the upper air was unusual. A nearly saturated atmosphere in 20 knot southerlies to about 650hPa (around 3.5km) was conditionally unstable (i.e. on the borderline between stability and instability). Overlying this were drier northerlies around 20 knots, backing northwesterly to 50 knots with height and also conditionally unstable to 400hPa (about 7.3km). The upper shear triggered occasional explosive development with radar showing several cells producing the heaviest rain rates and possible hail.

It was one of these that brushed the coast at Norah Head east of Gosford, giving the lighthouse 58mm, 46.4 falling in the hour to 3pm. Earlier, similar but weaker storms or showers gave Gosford (Narara) 11.8mm in 30 minutes to 3.30am, while one shower drifted across Botany Bay late evening giving Sydney Airport 11.6mm in 19 minutes to 11.11pm.
